Four Student Success Foundations

New Students: Welcome to Langara!

We’re so happy you chose to study with us. We understand that starting a new semester can feel a little overwhelming—but you’re not on your own. Our goal is to help you feel supported, confident, and set up for success from day one.

Langara offers a wide range of student services available to all students, and our faculty and staff are here to help you make the most of your academic experience. We encourage you to take a few moments to learn about these supports and start using them early—especially in your first few weeks.

Whether you plan to complete your program at Langara or transfer to UBC or SFU, building strong study habits, resilience, and academic skills now will benefit you throughout your post-secondary journey.

Start your academic success with these four key student success supports:

1. Langara Student Success Course

We can’t emphasize enough how valuable this course is. Students who complete it consistently report improved grades and reduced stress. You’ll learn effective time management strategies, stress-reduction techniques, and how to connect with key campus resources.

2. Peer Subject Tutoring

Free peer tutoring is available for a wide range of accounting and business courses, including:

FMGT 1115, 1116, 1215, 1321, 2293, 2294, 2325, 2371, 2421, 4800, 4810, 4816, 4820, 4824, 4860, and 4870.

Peer tutors are fellow students who have successfully completed these courses and have been vetted by faculty. Don’t wait until after midterms—go as soon as you notice challenges. Tutoring schedules are released in the first few weeks of the semester.

3. Faculty Office Hours

Attend office hours! Faculty dedicate weekly time to meet one-on-one with students to answer questions, review difficult concepts, and provide feedback on assignments.

Office hours are listed in your course outline, along with contact details. Reaching out early can make a big difference—don’t wait until a disappointing grade to ask for help.

4. Student Success Workshops

Throughout the semester, Langara offers short (approximately 20-minute) workshops via Zoom—making them easy to attend.

Topics include:

  • Time Management for Success
  • Overcoming Procrastination
  • Learning, Memory & Academic Success
  • And more!

Many workshops are offered multiple times, so if you miss one, another session will be available.
